If I lost you in this example, donât worry about it. For now, just remember:
Zoom Lenses with a single f-stop designation are larger and more expensive than Zoom Lenses with an f-stop range designation.
Figure 14 illustrates the relative size of these two hypothetical Lenses.
Now Letâs get into the specifics of Lens selection.
Understanding Lens Designations
Figure 15 shows a typical Canon Telephoto Zoom Lens.
Going clockwise around the Lens starting at the top right:
Minimum Focus Distance This is the closest that you can get to an object and still be able to sharply focus this Lens. The value is normally stated in English as well as Metric units.
Current Focal Length This indicates the focal length in millimeters selected by rotating the Zoom Adjustment Ring.
Focal Length Range This is the range of focal lengths covered by this Lens.
Auto Focus / Manual Focus Selector Auto Focus capability is built into the Lens but controlled by the camera when the Lens is attached.
Image Stabilizer Switch This function is also built into the Lens and controlled by the camera processor.
Zoom Adjustment Ring This is the large gripping area closest to the camera. You rotate it to Zoom in and out. You are actually changing the focal length of the Lens when you rotate this ring.
Focus Ring This is a smaller gripping area toward the front of the Lens and is only rotated for manual focus. Trying to turn this ring when Auto Focus is engaged can harm both the Lens and camera.
